Poverty strikes us in different ways
The president of SAFPU, Hareipha ‘Simba’ Marumo asks we support retired soccer player.
SA retired soccer player are not doing well |
“70percent of our retired players are living in extreme poverty”.
“The same players, who have been an inspiration and a symbol of unity to our nation, are today the subject of mockery and ridicule because just two years after retiring many of them are completely broke and have no skills to speak of to sustain their lives,” continued Marumo.
Marumo called on the PSL and the South African Football Association to help these players, whose situation is contributed to by a number of social factors, such as a lack of education and problems with alcohol abuse.
Prevention is better than cure
South African Football Association would do with some advice, from a PRP, on how to come up with solid ways of securing better lives for retiring soccer players.
South African Football Association could have long initiated ways that will back up the lives of retiring soccer players, to avoid problems.
But what if the soccer player retires after a year or Two, does he also deserve to get some sort of pension fund too? And I don't think SAFA giving them money would make things better, because most of these people are not educated, they will probably spend their money the way they are spending it now.
ReplyDeleteMr Marumo is making SAFA aware of the matter and at the same time he is asking them to start right away with ways that can prevent this.
DeleteI think there should be a law that says if you dont have a grade twelve you cant play soccer because many soccer player dont know english, they just embarass themselves when they speak english and that is why they can't manage their finances.
ReplyDeleteNot a law but a short introduction programme of English can be provided,so that they can have effective communication and a well understaning of any agreement.
DeleteWhat you saying it's true our soccer or foodball legend are not recognised as such, the only way to help them PSL must provide them with education and jobs on their late years, it must be implimented that each and every soccer player must get their metric level and some courses while they still young and fresh or while still on the game, invest their money to prevent such issues of poverty.
ReplyDeletei agree with you.We are aware of soccer academies in SA but it looks like they target new bloods only.It becomes a problem because there plyers that are identified at their late year, which gives them no chace to belong to any academy but a normal club.I suggest that SAFA starts an academy that will cater for all ages and education levels.
Deletei second saloma cause look at it this way this football stars some are not educated hey... and they use money like there is no tomorrow... and your lats statement is so true hey "South African Football Association could have long initiated ways that will back up the lives of retiring soccer players, to avoid problems" great blog tumi :-)
ReplyDeleteWe should never under esteemate the power of education.Stop thinking that education is useless because of the high unployment in SA.It is about granting yourself the ability to express yourself, the brainS to manage your finance and an understanding of any kind of agreement you sign up for.
DeleteIts wise that soccer players have a education background so that when their career ends they have something to fall back on.
ReplyDeleteSad events indeed though for the past seasons players in our domestic league have shown signs of breaking away from the norm of stupidity. For example Teko Modise, Itumeleng Khune & Shabba have invested in property thanks to Jazzman Mahlakgane.
ReplyDeleteYes that is true, that is why it is important for sport players mostly soccer players to be educated and have something to fall back on when their career fails.
ReplyDeletei think players should atleast have some form of education because its not guaranted that they gonna play sports for a longer period.
ReplyDeletethe players should find ways to make money besieds playing soccer, maybe they should invest or open their own business so that when they are no longer able to play they can have something to fall back on
